"Best of Show" Awarded To Exponent Public Relations At Minnesota PRSA Classics Awards

Agency cleans up with the most trophies, receiving awards in ten categories

MINNEAPOLIS (March 15, 2007) – The Minnesota chapter of the Public Relations Society of America awarded Best of Show and bestowed 10 of its 41 Classics Awards on one agency, Exponent Public Relations, during the 29th Annual Minnesota PRSA Classics Awards presented at Solera in downtown Minneapolis. Including Best of Show, the agency topped the charts receiving the most awards at the event this year.

The Classic Awards honor the best in the public relations field and are divided into categories representing the best in elements or tactics and the best in entire programs.

Exponent received Best of Show for its work on behalf of Novartis Animal Health US, Inc. The “Power of Pet-ometers on the Path to Play More” integrated communications campaign promoted playtime for all dogs — especially arthritic dogs that desperately need exercise to fight the health problems that come with age. Exponent excited veterinary clinics and dog enthusiasts with a single central element — a first-of-its-kind pet pedometer—by integrating grassroots marketing, media relations and educational initiatives.

The agency also won the Marketing Products program for the Minnesota State Lottery that gave consumers “72,000 Reasons to Scratch Big.” To drive home how easy winning is with the Lottery, Exponent focused on a surprising fact: 72,000 winning Scratch tickets are redeemed each day. The strategy was twofold: give players a chance to win via a statewide tour with an eight-foot scratch ticket, then congratulate a day’s worth of winners with a 72,000-slice cake unveiled at the Taste of Minnesota.

In addition, the agency took home the top prize in the Internal Communications category for their “Movin on Up—to Downtown” event with Colle+McVoy. While moving from the “burbs” to a newly renovated space in the Warehouse District’s Wyman Building could be difficult, disruptive and time-consuming, Exponent turned it into an event that employees, new neighbors and the city of Minneapolis embraced. It started with a video revealing the new location to employees, starring WCCO’s Frank Vascellaro, two Exponent staff members and the agency’s executive team who spelled out “Wyman” on their shirts (and one bare chest), and ended with an employee block party at which Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak was presented with a key to the agency – along with 100 other unknown keys.

“We couldn’t be happier to have been recognized by our peers for our creative work,” said Riff Yeager, Exponent Public Relations’ managing director. “Most important, these awards continue to demonstrate the tangible results we get for our work, and the satisfaction our clients receive in the results related to sales and brand awareness.”

Award winners in the elements category included a video PSA, audio PSA and a media kit all for one client—Homeownership Preservation Foundation—that created awareness about home foreclosures and helping troubled homeowners stay in their homes. Exponent created television and audio public service announcements and media kits to send homeowners to the toll-free call center in record numbers. A key strategy for putting homeowners at ease was to use humor to eliminate any confusion between the PSAs and predatory lending commercials.

Exponent’s media relations work for the American Olive Oil Association was also honored. The work helped the Association increase household use of olive oil through an aggressive media relations and recipe strategy targeted toward a high-potential market for the product — mainstream moderate Americans.
